Igalia

Motion Graphics Explainer

We created a 90 second brand film for Igalia, an open-source consultancy working at the core of technologies like Chromium, WebKit and Linux.

The aim was to provide a clear introduction to who they are and what they do. Something that could sit comfortably across their website, events and trade shows, and still feel relevant over time.

Igalia’s website is detailed and technically rich, but it can be hard to get a quick sense of the bigger picture. There wasn’t an obvious starting point for someone new to understand the scale or importance of their work.

The challenge was to simplify the message without losing credibility, and to make it work for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Trying to cover everything in one video would have been counterproductive, so we focused on a broader idea: Igalia’s work is everywhere, even if it isn’t immediately visible. That thinking shaped the opening. The suggestion that you are likely using their technology just by watching the film helps bring the subject closer to home and makes it easier to engage with. From there, the structure builds in layers. It starts with ubiquity, moves into capability, and then touches on philosophy.

We kept the level of technical detail under control. A few well-chosen examples such as browsers, graphics and multimedia were enough to show the range of their work without overloading the viewer.

The script went through several iterations, mainly to find the right balance. One of the key decisions was to hold back the more complex detail until later. Establishing relevance first made it easier to introduce specific technologies without losing clarity. This approach helped keep the film accessible while still reflecting the depth of Igalia’s expertise.

Visually, we took a more abstract route. Rather than trying to show everything literally, we used motion and layered graphic systems to suggest how different technologies connect and interact.

We built on Igalia’s existing brand elements, including typography, gradients and iconography, and extended them into a visual language that could support the full piece.

Because the film is used at events and trade shows, we also created a version that works without sound, supported by subtitles.

The finished film gives Igalia a straightforward way to introduce themselves across different contexts. It helps new audiences quickly understand what they do and why it matters.
