Child Bereavement UK

Funerals

Child Bereavement UK is a charity that supports children and families who have experienced the death of someone close to them. They approached us to create an animation that would explain funerals to children aged 4-12 who have little or no experience of death. This was a challenging project as it required us to strike a delicate balance between being informative and sensitive.

To ensure that we got the tone right, we worked closely with Child Bereavement UK and followed their approach of being calm, clear and factual. We avoided using ambiguous language such as 'passed away' and opted for clear and concise language that children can easily understand.

One of the main challenges we faced was that funerals vary across different cultures and religions. To address this, we focused on the common elements that are shared across different funeral services, such as the use of coffins, gathering with friends and family, and playing music. We also created two separate animations, one for cremation and one for burial, to cover the different scenarios that children may encounter.

Throughout the animation production process, we received feedback from Child Bereavement UK and made adjustments to ensure that the animations were both informative and sensitive. The end result was a set of animations that will help children understand what happens at a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.
